PEER May 21, 2007 Minutes

President Marilyn Warner called the meeting to order at 10:00 A.M.

Claire Cousins introduced Winona Jones who spoke on the History of Upper Pinellas.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved after two corrections.  The date was changed to April 16, and a spelling correction was made under “members present” to read Helen Lents.

Reports

President:  Marilyn reported that the PCTA Retirement Celebration was well attended and wonderful.  She thanked Dave and Sarah Byers and Bob Schlerf for the decorations.
-The summer get-together will be June 18, 11:30 AM, at Linda McGeehan’s home.  Directions to her house were in the May Pipeline, and her phone number is 535-0759 if anyone needs to call.
-Marilyn thanked everyone who helped make this a good year for PEER and mentioned especially the committee chairs, officers, Tax Shelter America, and the food committees.
-Six PEER members were elected state-wide as representatives to the FEA  Delegate Assembly in September :  Kathy Bell, Dave Byers, Kathy King, Jane Lee, Bob Schlerf, and Marilyn Werner.
-The deadline for articles for the Pipline is July 15.
 
Vice President:  Janey thanked everyone for their help all year, and also for the food today.
 
Treasurer:  Dallas reported there is a balance of $10,407.  Expenses for the Pipeline, printing of membership forms, and miscellaneous were $144.28.  In the Credit Union account we have $468 in Savings and $24,842.48 in five CD’s for a total of $25,310.48.  Interest earned this year was $280.73.
 
Membership:  Dave Byers reported that we have 299 members.  He urged anyone planning to join to do so by October 31 in order to be in the PEER Directory.  Volunteer hours reported last month were 552 school hours and 898 others for a total of 1,450.  The totals for the year are 2626 school hours and 6220 others for a total of 8846.

FEA-R:  Dave reported that Bob Schlerf is an alternate to the NEA Convention in July. Automatic delegates to the FEA-R annual meeting in Orlando on September 27 are President Marilyn Warner, Dave Byers as district director, and Bob Schlerf as past president of FEA-R.  Four more delegates will be elected during this meeting.
 
PAC:  Ethelstine Harris distributed a summary of the bills that passed the Legislature this year.  She also passed the envelope for PAC contributions and offered chances for a drawing at the September meeting for a basket containing a bottle of champagne and other relaxing items.  Chances are $1 or seven for $5 with proceeds going to PAC.
 
Scholarship:  Allin Turner announced that the PEER Scholarship was awarded to Kelsey Rhodes of Seminole High School.  Her bio and essay will be in the August Pipiline.
 
Flea Market:  Linda McGeehan passed a sign-up sheet for help with the flea market for new teachers to be held on Saturday, August 25.  Fourteen members volunteered to help.
 
Program:  Claire Cousins reported on the possibility of gifts for speakers at PEER meetings.  Pens would have to be ordered in quantities of 1000.  Key chains would cost about $12 - $15 for each one.  No action was taken.  Claire also passed out a survey based on the suggestions members made last month about topics for programs.  She listed 35 suggestions, and members were asked to mark the ones they found most interesting.

New Business

Elections: JoAnne Wilson was nominated for secretary at the April meeting.  There were no further nominations, and she was elected.  Bob Schlerf was nominated for treasurer and was elected after no further nominations were made.  Marilyn thanked Dallas Schimke and Nan Lanham for their service.  Elected as delegates to the FEA-R annual meeting in Orlando on September 27 were: Kathy Bell, Allin Turner, Janey Ball, and Linda McGeehan.   Dave Byers moved to approve the proposed budget for 2007-2008.  Kathy Bell seconded the motion, and the budget was approved.

There was a suggestion that next year field trips should be held on Mondays, but not on regular meeting days, and that they should occur frequently. An alternate suggestion was that there should be one in the fall and one in the spring.  Jane Lee volunteered to help look into it.
 
Members were urged to take advantage of the annual Book Swap by looking over the magazines and books and take some for their summer reading.
 
The next meeting of PEER will be September 17.
 
Meeting was adjourned at 11:20 A.M.
 
The meeting was followed by a delicious potluck luncheon.
